Origin: EU – Denmark and Germany (part of the nettle plant may be collected in Sweden).
Nettle powder is an easy way to absorb vitamins, trace elements, and nutrients it contains. The powder consists of finely chopped leaves of wild nettles, as well as partially stems and, possibly, seeds, mainly from young shoots, air-dried in warehouses. Sometimes a dehydrator is used for drying. This happens when the weather does not allow using natural air drying. In this case, the temperature of the circulating air does not exceed 40 degrees.
The powder contains, among other things, 20.4 g of protein (42% of the recommended daily intake, RDI) per 100 grams. High protein intake helps increase and maintain muscle mass as well as strengthen the connective tissue and bones.
Nettle leaves and root contain a wide range of nutrients, including:
Vitamins: vitamins A, C, and K, as well as several vitamins B.
Minerals: calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and sodium
Fats: linoleic acid, linolenic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid and oleic acid
Amino acids: all essential amino acids
Polyphenols: kaempferol, quercetin, caffeic acid, coumarins and other flavonoids
Pigments: beta-carotene, lutein, luteoxanthin, and other carotenoids.
Many of these nutrients are antioxidants that protect the body from free radicals.
Studies in humans and animals indicate the following beneficial properties of nettles:
Anti-inflammatory effect:
Reduces the production of pro-inflammatory hormones (1, 2)
Reduces pain caused by arthritis and osteoporosis (3, 4)
Helps with problems of urination and prostatic hyperplasia:
Animal studies show that nettle interferes with the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone. This can help reduce prostate size (5, 6)
Human studies have shown that nettle extract can help with problems with urination without causing side effects (7, 8)
Help in lowering blood pressure:
Nettle is a traditional means of lowering blood pressure with proven effectiveness (9)
May stimulate the production of nitric oxide, which acts as a vasodilator. Vasodilators relax the muscles of the blood vessels, helping them expand (9, 10)
Nettle contains substances that can act as calcium channel blockers, which helps relax the heart, reducing the force of contractions (9, 11)
Animal studies show that nettles help lower blood pressure and enhance antioxidant defenses of the heart (12, 13)
Helps control blood sugar:
A number of studies in humans and animals have shown a relationship between nettle and a decrease in blood sugar (14, 15, 16, 17, 18)
Nettle contains compounds that can mimic the effects of insulin (19)
A double-blind study of 46 patients with type II diabetes showed that a three-time intake of 500 mg of nettle extract significantly reduced blood sugar compared with placebo (20).
Note: many of the above studies have been relatively small in scale or conducted in animals. We do not recommend the use of nettle as an alternative to traditional medicines without consulting your doctor.
